United We Pray: 40 Days of Prayer

Thank you for joining us in 40 days of prayer as we approach Election Day. Every week, we will send you daily devotionals, complete with a passage of Scripture, a reflection, and a prayer to help you navigate this tumultuous season and unite in prayer with other believers who love our country.

Today’s Reading – I Timothy 2:1-2 – “Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.”

Today we live in toxic and turbulent times. This has impacted the entirety of our politics. While standing unapologetically for truth against evil, Christians must also love our enemies and heed God’s call to pray for all those in positions of authority in our government.

Today’s Prayer – Heavenly Father, we thank you for our nation and the blessings you have bestowed upon us in Jesus Christ. We pray for our leaders who represent us with their delegated authorities. We ask that you guide their decision-making and bend their heart towards your will so that they might promote what is good and reject what is evil. Please revive our hearts and heal our nation as we seek you.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading – Psalm 33:20-22 – “Our soul waits for the Lord; he is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in him, because we trust in his holy name. Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you.”

All elections have consequences and have a direct impact on public policy for all citizens. That is why Christians should be deeply concerned about the integrity of our political process as we contend for the Gospel and engage a lost and dying culture. We must also never forget that our ultimate hope and peace is found in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Today’s Prayer –  Gracious God, Thank you for the ability to come to you in prayer. As we boldly advocate for biblical truth in the public square and engage our culture with the salt and light of the Gospel, help us to never forget to put our hope and trust in You alone.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading – Proverbs 14:34 – “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.”

Our God is holy, holy, holy. He is full of righteousness, justice, and truth. As Christians, we are Christ’s ambassadors making our appeal to sinners who are far away from God to be reconciled to Him through faith in Jesus Christ. It is also our responsibility to engage in this Gospel mission with integrity, as ones above reproach.

Today’s Prayer – Dear God, you are holy, holy, holy. We know that righteousness exalts a nation, and that righteousness can only be found in Jesus Christ. We ask that you revive our nation and that our people would turn away from their sin and to the truth of God’s word. We ask that Jesus Christ would be exalted. Help us to be full of integrity as your servants as we pray that our nation turns away from sin to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading: “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

The Israelites repeatedly rebelled against God in the Old Testament, deliberately breaking their Covenant with Him. However, despite these failings, God, in His mercy, sought to call His people to repentance, forgive their sin, and heal their land. This is good news for us. If you want revival and healing in our nation, start by humbling yourself and seeking God’s face.

Today’s Prayer: Father God, America needs healing.  Healing begins when we humble ourselves and pray and diligently seek Your face.  We ask You to show us where we need to be humble and create clean hearts in us, hearts that desire to seek You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading:  “Moreover look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands…” (Exodus 18:21a)

Tonight, millions of Americans will tune into the Vice-Presidential debate, seeking to discern which administration will best lead our nation. As we draw closer to the election, pray that Americans will heed God’s instruction to the Israelites and seek leaders who fear God and are trustworthy.

Today’s Prayer:  Gracious Heavenly Father, thank you for allowing us to live in a free country where we have the ability to elect our leaders. We pray that You will open our eyes, grant us wisdom, and help us to discern the best leaders for our nation.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Today’s Reading: “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” (James 1:2)

Our joy is not dependent on our circumstances. True joy comes from Christ. Scripture doesn’t promise that our lives will be easy; but it does teach us how we can find joy, regardless of what is happening around us.

Today’s Prayer:  Father God, through the work of Your Holy Spirit, conform our hearts to You. Help us to find joy when we face persecution and trials. Sustain us, so that we can better serve You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading:  “But Peter and the apostles answered, ‘We must obey God rather than men.’” (Acts 5:29)

In Acts 5, as Peter and the apostles were fulfilling the Great Commission and spreading the news of Christ’s resurrection, the ruling authorities tried to stop them. Peter’s simple response contains instructions for how Christians should respond when dealing with governing authorities who are hostile to Christianity.

Today’s Prayer:  Father God, give us boldness that can only come from You. As our culture becomes increasingly hostile to You and Your truth, help Your Church not to bend the knee to earthly authorities when we face persecution, but instead, to put our faith and trust in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” (Proverbs 9:10)

America is in great need of wisdom. In our turbulent times, we need leaders who fear the Lord and seek to do what is right. Today, ask God to touch the hearts of those in authority and draw them closer to Him.

Today’s Prayer:  Heavenly Father, we need You. We need your truth, grace, and wisdom. When humans attempt to remove You from society, disaster is always the result. Draw our nation and our leaders closer to you, and grant us wisdom, which You give generously to those who ask for it.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading: “Fear not, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Fear does not come from God. He is our provider, our healer, and our strength. Why should we be afraid if we have put our trust in Him? In these turbulent times, when the world around us seems to be falling apart, set your eyes upon Jesus. Rest in Him.

Today’s Prayer:  Gracious God, thank You for the promises of Your Word. Regardless of our circumstances in this world, help us to rely on You for peace, strength, and comfort.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Today’s Reading: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” (Genesis 1:27)

The foundations of many of our political beliefs are found in this verse. This passage teaches us that all human beings have value because we are created in the image of God. It also tells us of God’s design for gender. Every aspect of our worldview should be rooted in Scripture. God’s Word is our foundation.

Today’s Prayer:  God, thank you for Your Word. Thank You for revealing your truth to us and for creating us with inherent value. Draw our nation closer to You and Your truth. Help our society to see and treat every person as one who is made in Your image.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem!  May they be secure who love you!” (Psalm 122:6).

Today marks the first anniversary of Hamas’s brutal attack on Israel when the terrorist organization invaded the country, assaulting and killing innocent civilians and taking hostages. One year later, Israel is still at war and faces increasing threats in the Middle East. As Christians, we must stand with and pray for Israel.

Today’s Prayer:  Heavenly Father, we pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Your Word has ordained Israel’s existence. We ask that you protect the Jewish people from persecution and violence. Allow our love and prayers for them to be a testimony of the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Draw Israel to You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading: “Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like a green leaf.” (Luke 11:28)

God has abundantly blessed the United States. We enjoy great freedoms, abundant resources, and a quality of life unparalleled in history. While we ought to be thankful for God’s blessings, we must never idolize them. Don’t put your trust in the things of this world; put your trust in Christ.

Today’s Prayer:  Heavenly Father, thank you for the many blessings you give us. Thank you for freedom, prosperity, and peace. Help us to remember that every good gift comes from You. Don’t let us become so comfortable that we trust ourselves or our riches. Help us to trust You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Reading:  For the LORD is our judge; the LORD is our lawgiver; the LORD is our king; he will save us. (Isaiah 33:22)

Much of the U.S. Constitutional framework is rooted in Scripture, specifically the Old Testament. This is why our system has worked so well, providing freedom, opportunities, and flourishing for the American people.

Today’s Prayer:  Gracious God in heaven, thank you for our Country and for giving us Founders who instituted our nation in light of Your Word and truth. Help us to preserve this great gift and never forget to honor You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Today’s reading: But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people.” (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

Scripture has power. It cuts through the reader’s soul, bringing peace and joy – but also conviction. The Apostle Paul’s admonition to Timothy in this passage should give all of us pause. How often do we seek temporary pleasure at the expense of pursuing God? This always leads to chaos on a personal level or for society as a whole.

Today’s prayer:  Heavenly Father, Your Word clearly states that difficulty comes when people pursue pleasure over You. Help us each day to decide to serve You and not our flesh. Sanctify us and sanctify our desires. Make us more like You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

We live in turbulent times. It is easy to read the news or scroll through social media and begin to lose hope. While the world around us may be consumed with chaos, Romans 8:28 provides us with hope. We know that God is firmly in control and that he works all things, regardless of how they may seem, together for good.

Today’s prayer: God, thank You for Your Word and the hope that it provides. In the midst of evil, help us not to despair. When we face struggles, help us to keep our eyes on You. Give us the boldness, courage, and love to be doers of good, regardless of our circumstances.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: ”The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”  (James 5:16b).

We are called to pray for one another.  God’s Word states that prayers from righteous people are powerful.  That power does not come from us but from the righteousness that comes from the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Prayer changes things, so pray for one another, and pray for our nation.

Today’s prayer:  Gracious God, thank You for allowing us to come to You in prayer. So often, we are tempted to try to solve our problems and make decisions without first consulting You. Help us to pray without ceasing. Bless our nation and draw us closer to You.

In Jesus name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me’” (John 14:6)

Salvation is found in no other name but Jesus.  He is the only way to heaven, the only way to God, and the only way to experience true joy. Our world is desperately searching for truth, joy, and fulfillment in all of the wrong places. It’s our job share the Gospel with them.

Today’s prayer:  God in heaven, we are thankful today.  Thank you for Jesus and His sacrifice on the cross. Help us boldly and lovingly share the Gospel with unbelievers and draw our nation and world to You through Your Holy Spirit.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading:  “One thing have I asked of the Lord that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.” (Psalm 27:4)

Today, many Americans are reeling from the effects of hurricanes that have destroyed their communities and even taken their loved ones from them. In times of trouble, we know that God is our refuge. Pray for God to stir our hearts to seek His presence.

Today’s prayer:  God of Creation, we thank you today for Your beauty and goodness.  Despite our circumstances, help us to find peace and strength in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?” (Psalm 2:1)

God is sovereign, and He is in control. No ruler, king, or elected official can supersede Him. The powers that be may seek destruction, and they often find it. But our God, the King of kings, holds the world in His hands. He triumphs over evil. Take comfort in that truth today.

Today’s prayer: Heavenly Father, together, we pray that you touch the hearts of our leaders. Spark in them a desire to pursue that which is good and reject that which is evil. Thank you for being in control and for not forsaking your people. Help us to find peace in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “When you are in tribulation, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, you will return to the Lord your God and obey his voice.”  (Deuteronomy 4:30)

The world around us is rife with chaos. We are facing everything from soaring inflation, rampant illegal immigration, natural disasters devastating our communities, and a very turbulent election cycle. Pray that we as a nation return to God and obey his voice.

Today’s prayer: Father God, bring us back to You. Help our nation to remember Your truth and help Your Church to stand up for righteousness. We desperately need You; help us to realize it.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”  (Proverbs 3:5-6)

The West, and the United States specifically, have forgotten to acknowledge God in our ways, exchanging His truth for man’s faulty wisdom. Today, pray for America to remember God. Pray that we will lean on Him and not our own understanding.

Today’s prayer:  Heavenly Father, thank You for our nation and thank You for our freedom. Help us not to lean on our own understanding but instead to trust in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)

With our words, we have the power to speak the truth or to spread lies. Each of us has a voice, and we will be held accountable for how we’ve used it. Pray for God to give us the boldness to be countercultural and reject the lies so prevalent in our society today.

Today’s prayer:  God, let our prayer mirror that of the Psalmist who prayed for His words and thoughts to be acceptable and pleasing to You. Change our hearts and let our words be edifying, uplifting, and truthful.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and shrewd in their own sight!” (Isaiah 5:21)

Pride is deadly. When we believe the lie that our way, our morals, and our rules are better than God’s, the results are devastating. Many of our leaders are “wise in their own eyes” and have rejected God’s truth. Pray for God to grant our leaders humility and wisdom.

Today’s prayer:  Most gracious Heavenly Father, we need humility. Help our nation and our leaders to seek You and Your truth and abandon our wicked ways. Grant us true humility, which comes from You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Therefore my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”  (1 Corinthians 15:58)

As the world around us chases fads and trends, changing its moral standards on every whim, be stable and secure in the truth of God’s Word.

Today’s prayer:  Great God in Heaven, Thank You for preparing a place for us in eternity. Help us to remember that we don’t live for this world. Give us courage, and help us be marked by our love.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day #32, Monday, October 28, 2024

Today’s reading:  “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22)

God is in control. The wind and waters obey Him, and nothing is out of His reach. He cares for you and every aspect of your life more than you can comprehend. He holds you firmly in His hands.

Today’s prayer:  Father God, You are in control. It is easy to become overwhelmed by our circumstances and the evil that is so prevalent in this world. Help us to remember the promises of Your Word and allow us to rest confidently in You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Today’s reading: Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

If you are in Christ, have been redeemed, and are a new creation, indwelt with the Holy Spirit. You are not defined by your sins, your shortcomings, or the desires of Your flesh; you are defined by what Christ did for You on the cross. Be encouraged today.

Today’s prayer:  Dear God, help us to boldly walk in the truth of our Salvation. Remind us that we have been redeemed, and encourage us to run the race You have set before us. Give us the courage to reject evil and stand for truth.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today’s reading: He shall cover you with his feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” (Psalms 91:4)

He is our protector, our strength, and our shield. This election will have serious consequences for our society. Because of this, we have the responsibility to engage, vote, and encourage others to do so. However, regardless of the result, our hope is not in this election. It’s in Christ.

Today’s prayer: Heavenly Father, You are good. You protect and sustain us. Help us to keep our eyes on You despite what is happening around us.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)

Christ gives us an invitation, an invitation to lay down our own lives, be transformed, and follow Him. He doesn’t just ask for a lot; He asks us for everything. In return, however, He gives us so much more.

Today’s prayer:  Most gracious and eternal God, thank You for Jesus. Help us, by Your Holy Spirit, to accept Your invitation to die to ourselves, be born again, and follow You with our whole being.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” (Hebrews 12:1)

Sin is heavy. It seeks to separate us from God and weigh us down as we run the race He has set before us. In our culture, we are in a battle between good and evil, and the world around us is desperately looking for answers. Together, let’s lay aside sin and be examples of the good news that is within us.

Today’s prayer:  Father, we need You. We need your grace and Your Holy Spirit. Sanctify us. Help us to lay down our sin, pick up our crosses, and follow You. Help us to be a light to those around us.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. (Galatians 6:7)

Our actions have consequences. We have agency and are responsible for what we do. In the United States, we have inherited many blessings, including our freedom. We are responsible for stewarding our nation, culture, and society. It is up to us to stand boldly for righteousness.

Today’s prayer:  Father in Heaven, help us to take responsibility for our actions, society, and culture. Make us bold, and help us to be ambassadors for You and for Your truth.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

Today’s reading: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

God’s Word is truth. A society that recognizes God’s Word respects truth, promotes what is good, and creates beauty. A society that rejects it soon celebrates all forms of evil. Let’s be a society that looks to God’s Word.

Today’s prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Word. Help us to let it be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Help us, and help our society, to heed the Bible’s commands and look to it for truth.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today’s reading: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” (Proverbs 1:7)

America is in great need of godly wisdom. When we rely on the knowledge of this world, we will certainly fail and fall short. Freedom, prosperity, human dignity, and flourishing cannot be maintained apart from Him.

Today’s prayer:  Heavenly Father, Your Word tells us that You give wisdom to those who ask for it. Today, we are asking, on behalf of our nation for wisdom. Help us to acknowledge You and to follow You closely.

In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Today’s reading: “God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne.” (Psalm 47:8)

Today is Election Day. We know that the stakes this year are high and that elections have real consequences for real people, for our neighbors whom we are called to love. Regardless of today’s outcome. Remember that God reigns over the nations. He is in control.

Today’s prayer:  Father God, thank you for allowing us to live in a free country where we have the right and privilege to vote. Let Your will be done today, and give us the courage and fortitude to put our hope and trust in You, regardless of the results. You are on the throne.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
