Now celebrating its 20th year, Liberty’s Helms School of Government kicks off its annual three-day conference tomorrow with serious conversations from a Christian perspective on how to address and solve national security threats, human trafficking, attacks on family, free speech, and religious liberty, and other critical public policy issues.

Liberty University’s Helms School of Government (HSOG) will host its 5th annual “Spring Public Policy Conference” on March 18-20, an event designed to promote a Christian academic discourse around timeless American values.

The theme for the 2024 conference is “Legacy of Freedom: Then and Now.” It will feature presentations and discussions that address pressing issues within our culture, including family, freedom of speech, the role of the Church, the sanctity of life, and upholding core constitutional rights for Americans, which are all under significant attack today.

“Our forefathers fought hard and sacrificed much to win and preserve our freedoms,” explained HSOG Dean and U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Jason Q. Bohm. “It is now today’s generation’s responsibility to protect and affirm our great nation’s founding principles, while acknowledging the challenges and injustices we have had to overcome to arrive at this point in our history.”

This year’s conference theme, “Legacy of Freedom: Then & Now,” directly references the school’s 20th anniversary, celebrating its two decades of training scholars to defend constitutional liberty in America and worldwide. As such, the conference will feature a series of papers highlighting the defense of freedom in America and a 20th anniversary celebration dinner.

“An academic conference can force a scholar out of the ivory tower to grapple with issues in real time with like-minded folks who are passionate about these issues,” said Dr. Kahlib Fischer, department chair for government and professor of government. “There are always interesting times and complex challenges. There’s never been a period in history where everything is simple and straightforward. There are always tangled and messy problems that need thoughtful analysis and discussion. In keeping with Liberty’s mission, we want Champions for Christ who are comfortable and competent discussing these complex issues.”

The public policy conference will feature a variety of lectures and presentations by distinguished experts on everything from foreign and economic policy, national security, and constitutionalism, and the role of Christianity in politics, while breakout sessions will take a deeper dive into China, global and economic challenges, human trafficking, military diplomacy, natural law originalism, and political philosophy.

Noteworthy speakers include:

This conference is a must-attend event for the Liberty community, if only because it fulfills a very important function of our mission as envisioned by Liberty University Founder Dr. Jerry Falwell, Sr.:

As Champions for Christ, we are called to apply our professional knowledge to every aspect of life, including politics and culture to help shape the moral and spiritual direction of our country and the world. And that includes getting involved and sharing our biblical understanding of civics, government, law, and politics in a way that informs and shapes public discourse and decisions about issues that affect Americans.

Part of the reason why we see so much of American government existing in a godless state today is because Christians have long been reluctant to enter those fields and don’t always have the courage to apply their biblical values to their profession.

This years’ conference serves as a reminder that believers have a duty to not hide their talents or biblical beliefs but to apply the truth of Christ directly to policy issues and institutions that are determining the future of America and, by extension, the world.
