Showing Life, Telling Truth

A new Idaho law requiring students to learn about fetal development through an ultrasound or animation will only confirm what children already know in their hearts — that the growing, moving, thumb-sucking baby in the womb is a human life.

Idaho’s new law requiring public schools to teach fetal development is a significant and positive step forward for the nation and future generations.

Senate Bill 1046, signed into law by Gov. Brad Little, R, last week, mandates that students in grades 5-12 receive instruction on human growth and development, including scientifically accurate, high-definition ultrasound videos and computer-generated animations depicting life’s development from conception to birth.

Little signed the bill into law last week after it passed through Idaho’s Republican-majority legislature. The Senate approved the bill on Feb. 27 with a 27-8 vote, and the House followed on March 18 with a 63-6 vote.

This law is not merely an educational reform — it is a moral and cultural milestone that affirms the dignity of every human life.

From a Christian, pro-life perspective, this law is an answer to prayer, a restoration of truth in a culture increasingly confused about the nature and value of human life. It reflects a growing desire among Americans, particularly young people, to understand the science of life in the womb — and to respond to it with awe, reverence, compassion, and responsibility.

By requiring students to learn the stages of fetal development, Idaho is planting seeds of truth in the hearts and minds of the next generation. When young people see a beating heart at six weeks, brain waves at eight weeks, facial expressions by ten weeks, and hear the sounds of a baby hiccuping, yawning, or even sucking its thumb in the womb, they can no longer be told that what is growing inside a pregnant woman is just “a clump of cells.”

They recognize the truth: This is a child — a living, growing, developing human being.

For decades, the pro-life movement has contended not only with political and legal opposition but also with widespread ignorance. Many people simply do not know what happens in the womb. They do not know that by the end of the first trimester the baby has formed all of its major organs or that at just 12 weeks a fetus can feel pain. This lack of knowledge has fueled indifference toward abortion and made it easier for a culture of death to take root.

Education changes that. When students discover factual, medically accurate information about fetal development, many become more empathetic, more morally grounded, and more inclined to defend the unborn.

As pro-life advocates have often observed, science is on our side.

When the truth is known, hearts begin to change. That’s why abortion advocates are afraid of laws like Idaho’s — because when people learn the facts, the arguments for abortion collapse.

Critics claim this law introduces a religious or ideological bias into the classroom. But there is nothing biased about science. Teaching students that human life begins at conception and develops in clearly observable stages is not indoctrination — it’s biology.

And teaching compassion for the unborn is not political — it’s moral. Public education already teaches students to care for endangered animals, respect the environment, and stand against bullying. We can also teach them to value our most vulnerable and voiceless members.

In truth, this law brings balance and depth to a conversation that has too often been one-sided. While Planned Parenthood and similar organizations gain access to schools to promote sexual freedom and downplay the consequences of abortion, pro-life voices have frequently been shut out.

Idaho’s new curriculum levels the playing field by introducing students to the biological reality of life in the womb — without pushing any political agenda. It simply tells the truth. And the truth, as Jesus said, will set us free (John 8:32).

Moreover, this kind of education is not just about the unborn — it’s about forming character and conscience in young people. Teaching them that life has value from conception instills a sense of responsibility, maturity, and empathy.

It challenges the prevailing narrative that personal convenience outweighs moral duty. It helps young men and women see that their choices have consequences and affect real human lives.

Idaho’s leadership deserves praise for courageously standing up for the sanctity of life. In a time when many states are moving in the opposite direction — expanding abortion access up to the moment of birth — Idaho is choosing to shine a light in the darkness. It is choosing to equip the next generation not with slogans or scare tactics but with truth, science, and moral clarity.

The state is part of a budding movement to increase awareness of fetal development among young people. In 2024, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, R, signed House Bill 2435 into law, mandating that all public schools in the state incorporate a state-approved segment on prenatal child development into the age-appropriate family life curriculum.

Schools may use a three-minute ultrasound video or computer-generated animation to fulfill this requirement. One approved option is Live Action’s “Meet Baby Olivia,” though its use is not mandatory.

The bill received strong support in both state legislature chambers, passing the House in March with a decisive 67-23 vote and later clearing the Senate by a 21-6 margin. Similar legislation has passed, has been considered, or is still progressing in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, North Dakota, and West Virginia.

As Christians, we are called to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16). This law is a tangible example of what that looks like in public policy. It is a way of loving our neighbor — especially our smallest and most vulnerable ones. It is also a reminder that we can make a difference when we speak truth in love and stand boldly for life.

The Scriptures speak clearly to the sanctity of life. Genesis 1:27 tells us that every human being is made in the image of God. Psalm 139:13-16 declares that God “knit me together in my mother’s womb” and that each of our days was ordained by Him before one of them came to be.

These words are divine revelation that science increasingly confirms. With the aid of modern medical imaging, we can now see in stunning clarity what the Word of God has proclaimed for millennia: Life begins at conception, and it is intricate, beautiful, and worthy of protection.

Let us pray that other states follow Idaho’s example and support efforts that affirm life, educate hearts, and defend the unborn. Let us never grow weary in doing good — for in due season, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9).
